Thanks for visiting my author website. Allow me to introduce myself. I am Brooke Williams, a 30-something year old author. I have loved writing for as long as I can remember. In fact, when I was in grade school, volunteers ran a writing center in the school and I was a frequent visitor. In that center, the volunteers would type the stories we wrote onto half sheets of paper and then we would draw in the illustrations. I still have well over a dozen such books that I wrote at a very young age. They are entertaining to read today and the drawings are even better. Once I moved on to high school and then college, I was the kid in the class that was always thrilled with a writing assignment. Five pages on a certain topic? Yippee! I didn’t write in a creative manner at that time so any chance I got to write was one I was glad to hear about. In college, many students “fixed” the margins on their papers so they could write less and still get the right amount of pages ready. I was the student that “fixed” the margins in the other direction. I needed MORE room to get in what I wanted to say!
I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a double major in Mass Communications and Religious Studies. I was born in the Midwest and remained in the Midwest, moving only an hour and a half from my parents to begin a career in radio. I was in radio throughout college and quickly got a full time job at a popular station in Nebraska. I held the position of Production Director and on-air host for a full decade. As the Production Director, I made the commercials and other things you hear between songs…you know, everyone’s favorite part of radio! As an on-air host, I held a variety of different shifts including evenings and Middays. I filled in for other times when needed.
My husband Sean and I got married in 2001 and we had our first daughter in 2009. Kaelyn changed our world in many different ways. I call her the second love of my life. When she came along, I knew I no longer wanted to work full time. I wanted to spend every moment possible with her so I left my job in radio. I stuck around on a very part time basis for a little over a year before I realized it wasn’t really worth the commute to do the little I was doing. At that time, I decided I needed to find something I could do from home. Since writing has always been my passion, it only made sense to put the two together.
I began a career in freelance writing and at first, things started off slow. I found a few little jobs here and there and would type my fingers off trying to earn a little money. After a while, I got good at finding jobs and before I knew it, I had more than I could handle. When people ask what I write about, it’s hard to answer. Anything and everything is the best answer, really. I have written about refinishing cabinets, traveling in New York, landscaping, learning programs and so much more. I wrote for a company in England, a local company, and one in Wisconsin among many others. One of my favorite and most constant clients is Goodbye Crutches, a company that provides an alternative to crutches to those with an injury. I had so much fun that I looked forward to my daughter’s nap time more than ever so I could write.
Writing articles was a wonderful way for me to get some of my creative talent out there. I feel like those who have spent any time on the internet have probably read some of my things! But fiction writing has always been a bigger interest of mine. When I first got a full time job in radio, I felt driven to write “Someone Always Loved You,” but since that time, I hadn’t really written anything creative in that manner. I ran across a company called “Chainbooks” who, at the time, was paying authors to write first chapters of books. A different author would then write chapter two, a third author chapter three and so on until the book was complete at 24 chapters. I wrote as many first chapters as I could come up with and one of my starting chapters turned into a full book eventually. “Small Town America” came out with the help of many other authors and I suddenly felt inspired to write more of my own fiction novels.
Next, I wrote “Beyond the Bars,” and though I didn’t know what I was going to do with it, I was glad I had completed it. Then, I found a company looking for authors to write short novels for them to publish so I wrote several for them. I attended a nearby writing conference and was inspired to write yet another novel, “Wrong Place, Right Time,” which was published by The Writer’s Coffee Shop in 2014.
In 2013, my daughter Sadie was born and my writing slowed a bit. I have been amazed at how much I have been able to get done around the two girl’s schedules, but there’s always more I would like to do. I have a lot of ideas and not very much time, but I am blessed that they sometimes nap at the same time, allowing me to get some work done. Overall, however, my time is spent with them and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Sadie is the third love of my life and I can’t imagine what the day would be like without her anymore.
I continued on with the writing journey by publishing "Accept this Dandelion" followed by "Mamarazzi" and the short story "Backwards Christmas" with Prism Book Group in 2015 and then put out a few more self-published titles myself including "Dandelions on the Road" with more to come!
There are plenty of days when I feel like I am “just a mom,” but I fully believe there is NO such thing as “just a mom.” Moms are so important and there is so much to each and every one of us. Writing is a huge part of my life and I hope that it brings as much enjoyment to others as it has brought to me.
