Character Possession

I have to admit, when I am in the midst of writing a story, I feel a bit possessed. Whenever I get a free moment away from my girls, all I want to do is flesh out the story. I find myself lying awake at night trying to hash out plot issues. The characters bug me to write their stories.

I have said this often to those who ask and even some who don't...I only write a story when the plot/characters/whatever bugs me SO much that I can't NOT write it. Lately, characters have been taking hold of my mind often.

When I wrote "Accept this Dandelion," I thoroughly enjoyed my main character's antics. And I formed a few side characters simply to support Renee's role in the book. When I completed the book, I had a smile on my face. That was that! Done and done! I had no idea that over a year later, one of the side characters would start to bug me to tell HER story.
Picture
Her name is Eva Merida and this is sort of what I imagine her looking like. She's petite, beautiful, and has gorgeous hair. She's as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside and originally, I meant for her to be stiff competition for Renee, my main character in "Accept this Dandelion."

So when the "voices" in my head told me that Eva needs a man and I had to write her story to see how she found love, I was sure I could brush them off. I was wrong. The inkling continued. And so I feverishly wrote "Dandelions on the Road." Eva's romantic comedy journey to happiness. It isn't a cookie cutter, ordinary love story either!

Once I completed that book, Renee came back to me and was like hey, if you're going to write about her, you have to do another one on me! Something like that... :) I negotiated with Renee and we have come to an agreement. "After the Final Dandelion" will continue both Renee AND Eva's love stories, giving their readers a final look at how things look after both women completed their journey on the "Accept this Dandelion" TV show.

Now that I've explained all that, you should know that I'm in the throes of writing "After the Final Dandelion" now. Normally, I like to wait several months, if not way longer between writing books. But this time, they're bugging me too much!!! Those characters!!!  Plus, I feel like I'll remember more if I do it sooner rather than later. And so...I write. Feeling possessed by these two women until I get their stories straight!

Luckily, I write fast. Perhaps in a month or so I'll be able to sleep at night without plotting someone's wedding, someone's engagement, someone's impromptu emergency haircut.

But for now, I've already said too much. And the only reason they're letting me take a break in their story now is because I'm still technically writing about them. :) Back to the salt mines with Eva and Renee now!!!

Dandelions on the Road Preview

I had so much fun writing "Accept this Dandelion" that I just had to continue the story. I came up with the idea to make the book into a three book series. The "Dandelion" series. Book 1: Accept this Dandelion. Book 2: Dandelions on the Road. Book 3: After the Final Dandelion.

If you've read the first book, you know it's about a localized version of The Bachelor TV show. One man chooses from a pool of women. And plenty goes wrong. In the second book, Dandelions on the Road, the tables turn and a woman does the choosing. The woman in charge is someone who came close to getting the guy in the first book, but lost out in the end. The third book will be a wedding. That's all I'll say. :)

I'm happy to announce that the second book in the dandelion series is completed. I have been going back through and editing it and I will continue to do so. It's in a "needs to sit" stage right now before I go back through again. In hopes that I see things I didn't before. I am eyeing an early winter release date, but we'll see on that as well.

In order to bring you into my process and give you a sneak peak at my current work in progress, here's part of the first chapter of "Dandelions on the Road." Please let me know what you think!

Dandelions on the Road
CHAPTER ONE

“Daisies are my favorite flower.” Eva Merida smiled into the bright light of the camera.

An exasperated sigh sounded from the other side of the darkness. “The show is about dandelions. You’ll be handing out weeds not flowers.”

Eva shifted in the chair. The producer wasn’t a patient man, but he needed to ask better questions if he wanted her to give certain answers. He asked about flower preference and she told him the truth.

“Okay,” Mike the producer spoke again, this time from the side of the camera where she could see half of his outline. “Tell us what you like about dandelions.”

“Dandelions.” Eva pasted a smile onto her face. Her cheeks hurt. She didn’t know what she was getting herself into when she agreed to be the Bachelorette on the local show Accept this Dandelion. Granted, she appeared on the first season of the show, but she was one of many girls then. This time, she was alone and there was a lot more pressure. And the men hadn’t even been chosen yet. “I like the idea behind dandelions. Technically, they’re weeds. But the grow fast and spread furiously and no matter how hard you try, there’s no stopping them. It’s what I want from love.”

Mike scoffed. “That’ll work.”

As his shoes squeaked against the studio floor, Eva watched his outline fade into the dark background before she stood. He must be done with her. What a rude man. She didn’t remember him being that abrupt when she taped Accept this Dandelion before. Of course, her judgment was more than a bit clouded by Ben McConnell, the bachelor the show revolved around. Eva really believed he could make her happy. But she came in third on the show. And in a way, she was glad. Ben ended up with Renee and they were a match made in heaven. Eva and Renee became close on the show and had stayed in contact ever since. Renee was a good friend and she deserved the happiness she found with Ben.

Eva hoped she could find the same kind of love on the show. The odds were good. She’d have twelve potential suitors. Surely one of them would be “the one.”

She approached the nearby camera operator. “Need anything else?”

The man stuffed the remainder of a Pop Tart into his mouth and brushed the crumbs from his fingers. “Don’t think so.” Eva winced as Pop Tart crumbs flew from his lips. She smiled and turned on her heel, removing the battery pack from the back of her skirt and unthreading the microphone from her shirt.

Microphones were a pain, but she was used to messing with them. One of the blessings that came from being on Accept this Dandelion, the local version of The Bachelor, was the new job she got because of her appearance on the show. Eva had worked for Furry Friends Rescue League for years. But once her employer saw her on television, she knew Eva was a good fit for the new spokesperson position they were creating.

Eva loved her job. She got to travel the city on a weekly basis, carting along one furry animal or another. She would show them off on TV news shows, radio programs, and to local papers. There were a lot of other elements involved with her position, but spending time with the animals and helping them find good homes was her favorite part. The animals she took on the air right there at KETO always got placed into a home the same day.

Eva enjoyed her life. She had the job of her dreams, good friends, and a solid family. She was only missing one thing. Someone to share it with. She hoped and prayed that she would find that person on the other side of a dandelion.

Brooke's REVIEW:

What a beautiful love story. In this book we get a two for one deal. And I liked that one of the storylines was unconventional. It wasn't a meet and immediately fall in love type of story. The couples interest and emotions grew over the time that passed in the book. There were many great lessons in the book along with vivid imagery and a compelling story. I was enjoying it and then bam chapter 11 hit and I was riveted and really invested. A must read!!

Author Interview...Peggy Trotter

1. This is your debut novel! Congratulations! When did it all start?

Oh, years and years ago!  Really! But I actually finished it about six years ago. Then I discovered American Christian Fiction Writers where I learned a ton as to what makes a better novel. Now, after several edits, it’s finally coming out.

2.  Do you always write in the Historical genre?

No. I always write from a Christian perspective, but I also write contemporary. I have my second one coming out on Oct. 9th, and it’s a contemporary Christian romance. It’s entitled, Reviving Jules.

3. People are always interested in how the idea of the book began. What started the whole premise of Year of Jubilee?

I remember wondering how a young girl would get along in the old days without family support to help her. It would be such a lonely existence just trying to care for yourself and provide the necessities.  And since I’m a romantic at heart, it went from there to delivering her from the meager life through God’s plan, in the form of a handsome stranger, of course!

4.  What’s the main message of your book?

Hope. I want people to read the book, be carried away by its realism and understand that with God, there is hope in every situation. God can take any problem or a plethora of problems and flip it over so fast, you freeze in awe. He is that amazing.

I also want to portray a Christian-based passion in a wedded couple’s lives. Many people think Christians lead boring “Leave-it-to-Beaver,” kind of lives without real challenges or deep-set feelings, and that’s just not true.

5.  So what’s next? Historical or Contemporary?

LOL. Maybe suspense? I’m actually working on all three!!! So we’ll see what comes up next! Just like the theme in my books, I can’t wait to see what God’s has planned for me next!

Peggy Trotter has been writing something for over 30 years. The empty-nest syndrome set her to groping for a new direction, and wow, did God answer! Year of Jubilee, a Christian Historical Romance set in southern Indiana, debuted on April 10th  of 2015 through Prism Book Group. A second, a Contemporary Romance entitled, Reviving Jules, will follow on Oct. 9th,  2015 as well. She loves to reveal God’s miracles through the world’s underdogs and mix in a little love and happy endings. And a dash of heat!

She finaled in the Indiana Golden Opportunity Contest in 2013 in the inspirational Category, and is a 2014 ACFW Genesis Finalist in the Novella Category. Seldom does she stand still, but when she does, it’s to praise her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Creator of all gifts and Bestower of all blessings!

Ugly Paradise by Lindsey Paley

Beneath beauty, evil lurks…

Katie Anderson has no idea who she is, or why she was abandoned to her fate after an attack by an escaped Sumatran tiger — the pet of a local Californian scriptwriter.

Who was with her when she was attacked? Why was there a severed goat's head secreted in her rucksack?

In the five years since the attack, Katie has grown accustomed to the indelible paw print etched on her cheek, which draws sympathetic glances and repulsed stares in equal measure. That is, until the cruelty of a casual comment from a wrinkle-free customer at The Alice Garden restaurant in Sanur Beach sparks her quest for answers, launching Katie on a painful path to discover the truth.

Will Katie find the spiritual and emotional serenity she craves? Or will society's obsession with physical perfection defeat her progress?

Interview questions

1. Where did the idea for 'Ugly Paradise' originate? Since most of the story is set in Bali, how much research did you have to do?  Have you visited there? If not, is it high on your list?

I have wanted to set one of my novels in the beautiful, exotic ‘Island of the Gods’ that is Bali since we took a vacation there fifteen years ago. The beaches are pristine and golden, the palm trees sway gently in the breeze and the sea is the most perfect azure. But what draws me most to Bali is its people. Despite having first-hand knowledge, I still did a lot of research - which I have to say only made me want to return! It is firmly on my bucket list.

2.  What other exotic locations (or non-exotic for that matter) have you travelled to? Where would you like to visit that you haven't seen yet?

I have been to Hawaii which I loved. Again the island inspired me to include it in one of my novels - The Crazy Pursuit of Love. But I enjoy city breaks, too. One of my favourites is Paris where my family and I spent a fabulous weekend a couple of years ago helping me to celebrate a milestone birthday. Everywhere you looked there was something spectacular to see, but the best experience was a visit to Versailles.

Still on my wish list is Vancouver. We went to Toronto last year and were awe-struck by the Niagara Falls. We loved Canada and are keen to return and the west coast beckons this time.

3.  Do you write to a plan or outline, or are you a panster?

I’m a planner, definitely. I write an outline and then the character studies. Unfortunately, I also have to write my novels out with good-old pen and paper in jotter pads. I’ve tried writing straight onto the computer keyboard but, for me, creativity doesn’t seem to flow that way.

4. Do you have a special place to write? Or a special routine?

In the summer months I use our tiny peppermint-and-cream summerhouse (it’s more of a shed really!) in the garden. I can really delve into the lives of my characters when I’m away from the hustle and bustle of family life. But in the winter, I sit at the kitchen table. I try to write everyday even if it’s only a couple of lines, and I work best in the mornings.

5. What are your hobbies away from the computer? Can I make a wild guess that one of them has to do with food?

Spot on! I love baking, especially experimenting with new recipes or trying out a new twist on a familiar favourite. In my novel ‘Stiletto heels or Bicycle wheels’, I triple-tested the recipes that are included in the book.

I also like to get out with friends for a game of golf. None of us are very good, though. I still haven’t managed to get my handicap. Every year I promise myself that I will achieve the goal, but as yet I’ve not been successful. It probably has to do with the fact that we will only play if the sun is shining!

6.Do you write one work until it's finished and then begin another or do you work on several WIPs at once?

I do try to write each novel until it’s finished, but I find that I usually am editing the last novel whilst drafting the next. I’m always on the look-out for ideas for the next book and I carry a tiny notepad in my purse for whenever inspiration strikes.

7. What is the wildest (or scariest) thing you've ever done?

One of the scariest things to have happened is getting caught in New York when Hurricane Sandy hit. Just seeing Times Square empty was creepy. But would you believe the thing that scares me most is ladybugs? In the UK we call them ‘ladybirds’ Urgh, just typing the word sends shivers down my spine!

8. And finally, what’s next for you? What are you working on now?

I’m currently working on a Christmas novel - ‘Snowflakes and Christmas Cakes’. Yes, you guessed it, my love of baking is raising its head again! It’s weird writing about Christmas in Spring, so I’ve got a CD of Christmas music that I put on to inspire me. My family groan about it, of course! Who wants to hear ‘Frosty The Snowman’ at Easter?

Éire's Devil King

Book 3 of Éire's Viking Trilogy

by Sandi Layne

Release Date: April 2 , 2015

Published by The Writers Coffee Shop
Genre: FICTION / Historical Fiction Time Periods/ Medieval / Viking ISBN e-book: 978-1-61213-376-8
Available from: Amazon, Kobo, Barnes and Noble, and TWCS PH

~~SUMMARY~~

A man of ability and ambition, Tuirgeis Erlingrson has nurtured the desire to carve a place of leadership for himself on the Green Island, Éire, that he has raided multiple times. After the death of his wife in Nordweg, he takes his surviving son to Éire. Having connections with his adopted brother, Cowan, and Agnarr, his former countryman, Tuirgeis feels he has the support he needs to make his claims strong.

Agnarr is torn. His promise to Aislinn to remain with her on Éire is still in force, and he resists Tuirgeis’s requests to join the conquering forces from Nordweg. He desires above all things to maintain a safe home for his wife and children in Dal Fíatach. Charis encourages Cowan to do the same, though this makes for tense moments between them.EDK-3D-Open-Book-2

After initial disastrous attempts to achieve his ambition, Tuirgeis comes to learn that there is more to claiming a kingship than merely overpowering the locals. Tuirgeis finds himself at odds with the very people he had hoped would reinforce him. In addition, he wants to establish his father-line. He has one son; he wants another to be born of Éire. Will the woman of his choice accept and support him?

At length, Agnarr and Aislinn—though she is heavy with child—sail with Cowan and Charis to join Tuirgeis as he battles over one final summer to attain the High Kingship of the island.

Tuirgeis knows he doesn’t have long to make his claims; the Danes are coming in greater numbers than before. As he wins men of Éire to his cause, he has to maintain the relationships he has already fostered with Agnarr and Cowan. Charis finds that her Otherworldly gifts are needed by a man she considers her enemy.

~~EXCERPT~~

It was dark in the langhús, save for the glowing of the coals banked in the fire ring. Agnarr enjoyed his wife’s responsiveness to him, and when they made love, he never forgot to thank his new God for letting her live through the births of the children their bodies made together. Before the sun crept under the door and through the shutters over the new windows, they were smiling and silent and relishing the moments—he knew there would only be moments—before the children stirred in the bench-bed they shared. Later, as their son and daughter began shifting restlessly prior to awakening, Agnarr sat up and blew out a breath. “Wife.” “Yes, husband?” She joined him, finding his hand with hers in the shadowy enclosure of their private area. EDK-3D-Paperback-1“We need to be ready. You need to be ready. You and the children.” She sighed and shifted on the blankets so that she was looking directly at him. As was her habit, she continued to touch him with her fingers as she spoke. “I can fight. And you gave Dow a real knife at the Christ Mass.” Discomfort tightened his stomach as he shook his head. “You need to be able to escape, just in case.” He knew far too well what would happen if someone found his attractive wife. Someone whom he didn’t know. Someone who would find her dark hair appealing and the tatú on her cheek mysterious and alluring. Someone who would want to take her as their leman, as he had once taken Charis. Someone who might take his son as a slave. Jaw tightening in anger, he shook his head again. Hard. “You know what can happen to you.” Her eyes were on his face, and he met their steady gaze. “And the children. You need to be able to get away. We should find a way to make you safe.”
