First Library Event & Prism Book Bash Invitation

Last Thursday, May 22nd, I did my first library event.  The library was kind enough to host myself and another local author.  We took turns speaking and then people were able to ask questions.  We also brought books to sell and sign for readers.
It was a nice first event because it was a small venue.  I was a little worried because I take my daughters to the library regularly and I asked the librarian that very morning how many people usually show up.  She said they either have a room full or none.  I hoped the other author would bring in lots of people because I didn't know how many were coming for me!  But in the end, the room was about half full.  It was perfect.  Not too many, but at least some!

Picture
I hadn't really had much time to prepare what I was going to say with my two crazy daughters running around the house all day and other projects and writing assignments waiting for me when they were sleeping.  So hopefully I made sense!  I just went over how I got into writing and a short version of my publishing career and why I love it so much.  I took a lot of books because I had no idea what to expect and didn't want to run out.  About half the people there bought a book and nearly all of the rest took one of my business cards and said they were going to look up kindle versions online.

Picture
It was a fun event and something completely out of the ordinary for me on a Thursday night. I'm normally home chasing the girls around the driveway.  So I enjoyed getting out and talking to adults!  It was nerve wracking because as a writer, I'm used to sitting at home alone and interacting with the imaginary people I make up...not real ones looking at me!  But I think I survived it well and I look forward to doing more such events...especially with my two upcoming released in December (Wrong Place, Right Time) and February 2015 (Accept this Dandelion).

Until my next LIVE event, I have an invitation for you regarding an online party!

I am a new author with Prism Book Group, but I have been trying my best to read the work of other authors within the group and participate in their facebook page and so on.  When I heard the group wanted to start having monthly online facebook parties, I jumped in!  The first party will be May 30th from 6-9 pacific time.  Join the party here.

It's going to be a lot of fun.  Several of the Prism Book Group authors will host a portion of the event.  There will be giveaways, question and answer times, details on a variety of books, and just time with other authors and readers.

If you are free that evening, even if you will be in and out, it'd be great to have you join the event.  By joining using the above link, you will get updates on your facebook page when someone posts within the party.  You can read what interests you and skip the rest!  Prism Book Group plans to hold these parties monthly, hopefully the last Friday of the month each time.  I look forward to being a part of them!  I participated in similar party in the form of a cover reveal recently during which I "took over" the party for 20 minutes.  It was a lot of fun interacting with readers and answering questions.  It was a bit of a challenge with a baby in my lap, but I made it work!

I look forward to meeting you at an upcoming in person event or online during one of the Facebook parties.  Hope to "see" you virtually on Friday!

Author Interview and Book Review...Mail-Order Groom by Cindy Flores Martinez

I had the pleasure of reading "Mail-Order Groom" and getting to know the author.  Here is an interview with her and a review of the book.  Enjoy!

Tell us a little bit about your background.

I grew up in a suburb of Los Angeles. I have an MFA with an emphasis in Screenwriting. I've been a screenwriting instructor, screenplay consultant, script reader, and screenplay collaborator. I've also been involved in film finance.

Now tell us how you got into writing.

Mail-Order Groom is my first attempt at writing a novel. When I thought of the idea for the story in 2006, I wrote it as a screenplay. At the time, I was a screenwriter, and I also helped producers and other writers with their screenplays. I went a step further and tried to have Mail-Order Groom made into a movie. I created business plans and budgets, sought financing, and reached out to directors, co-producers, and actors. I personally hand-delivered the screenplay to a major talent agency in Los Angeles for a famous director to read. I never intended to write fiction until the movie project went nowhere. I wanted to tell this story so badly. I realized that turning it into a novel was the one definite way I could do that. I'm working on several other stories now, so it looks like I'm here to stay.

Was getting published hard?

Mail-Order Groom is self-published. Before I finished writing it, someone who read my manuscript expressed interest in possibly publishing it. I decided to hold on to it because I wanted to know what it was like to publish my own book. I really enjoy business, and I liked the idea of being involved in the business side of this endeavor. The process has been very exciting. I plan to publish more works in the future.

Give us a summary on your novel.

Mail-Order Groom is about Lisa, an American woman, who marries Krzysztof, a Polish stranger, who needs a green card in order to stay in America. She's just about to marry her fiancé Jeff when he calls the wedding off and breaks her heart. In a twist of fate, she meets Krzysztof on a website that her friend Daphne shows her, and she recognizes him as the man she has seen in town. He and his uncle Jerzy convince Lisa to marry him. It's strictly a business deal, but she finds herself falling for Krzysztof. The problem is that he's not planning to stay in America forever. She faces the risk of being heartbroken all over again.

Where do you get your ideas?

I thought of the idea for Mail-Order Groom after I read about Polish men who marry for green cards, but all of my other ideas usually come from my own experiences. I create fictional characters and events around them. So, they're similar to things that have happened in my life, but not identical.

How long does it take you to write a novel?

It took me at least three years to write Mail-Order Groom because I wasn't able to work on it full-time. I was busy with my job and with life in general. There were times when I couldn't work on it for many days or weeks, and even as long as a couple of months. It was frustrating because I loved writing the story and I wanted to finish it. I remained focused on my goal no matter how many distractions came along. Reaching the end of the final chapter was incredibly rewarding.

Do you find certain times of the day or certain things inspire you to write?

Music inspires me to write, especially when the words or the tone of a song are similar to what my characters are experiencing. Music helps stir feelings inside of me that I wouldn’t feel otherwise, and it enables me to write better scenes. I also tend to get ideas late at night when I'm trying to sleep. I often find myself turning my computer on at the oddest hours so that I can write my thoughts down.

We'd love to hear a few quirky facts about you...things that don't normally come up in an interview!

Even though I write romantic comedy, and Mail-Order Groom was meant to be a romantic comedy movie, my favorite movies to watch are action films. I love big explosions and wild car chases. I don’t care how unrealistic they are. I enjoy the ride. Even when it comes to TV shows, I'm not the type to watch sitcoms. I enjoy crime shows and reality shows that involve competitions, like Survivor and The Amazing Race.

Anything else you want to add!...

Mail-Order Groom has Polish characters in it as well as some Polish culture. If you enjoy the Polish culture or like learning about other cultures, I think you'll enjoy this story. Everyone who reads it says they really like Krzysztof.

Mail Order Groom is a very cute, clean romance novel.  It takes an old idea (marrying in order to get a green card) and puts a very new spin on it.  I won't give away the details or what that spin is, but it's fresh and makes the whole storyline work in a new way.

The book opens with a history of the story and idea.  The author actually wrote it in screenplay version first and it looked promising that it would get turned into an actual movie.  Then, what happens to many writers happened to Cindy...she heard promising things and then nothing more.  I could see this movie doing well on the Lifetime channel or somewhere else that plays cute little love stories.  It would be a welcome addition.  The executives who make those decisions can take my word for it.  Ha.

The book was what I would call a romantic comedy and the lead male character was very funny.  He had a few lines that made me laugh out loud and I enjoyed the lead female character's antics as well.  This book was a fun, light read that really helped pass time.  It was hard to put down because you just wanted to know what happened to these people!  The characters were likable and easy to relate to in many ways.

My only complaint about the book was the lead female character's ignorance about marrying for a green card and the illegalities that go along with that.  She seemed very surprised that it was an illegal thing to do and that seemed unrealistic.  Otherwise, the book was well written, well plotted, and easy to read, not to mention humorous on top of everything else.

I also felt like the book ended too quickly.  I was into the characters and wanted to see a happy ending etc.  The ending was nice, but it seemed as if it happened too fast.  The book could have been several chapters longer to let the reader see things play out a little more instead of speeding through it.  I was enjoying it too much to see it end!

I would definitely recommend this book to those who enjoy light romantic comedies.  It's very enjoyable and worth the time reading.

I have always loved to write.  I readily admit that fact.  When I was in college and the professor would assign a 5 page paper, I would have to hold back a shout of joy.  My only problem is that 5 pages was seldom enough.  So while most college students were fixing the margins bigger to write less, I was making mine smaller to have more room.  I like to write and I like to write lengthy things.

So novel writing seemed like a natural fit and it's something I've always wanted to do and am thrilled to be having more success in now.  But when my 5-year-old asks me to tell her a story at night, I don't turn her down.  I also don't tell her novel-length stories.  Sometimes, I just tell her what we did that day or what we are going to do the next day.  Other times, I come up with something more imaginative.

One night several months ago she wanted a story about a sheep specifically.  She always enjoys stories where things are lost and want to find their mommies as well.  From those requests, "Baby Sheep Gets a Haircut" was born.  I spun a story with a wiggly baby on my hip trying to stick her finger in my mouth and a 5-year-old laying on her bed, back exposed so I could tickle it.  As the story came to a close, my 5-year-old laughed.  "Good story, mommy," she said.  And then she asked me to tell it again.

The next night, she wanted it again.  And again and so on and so forth.  She enjoys variety and this was the first time I'd told her a story she requested again.  So, the writer in me knew I had to write it down...if only to remember it later!  I wrote it down and in a slow moment when I was caught up with my work and on a complete and total whim, I sent it to a children's publisher.  The author in me took over, I guess.

Several months passed and though I still occasionally tell it to my daughter, I had mostly forgotten about the story...or at least the fact that I actually submitted it for publication.  When I got an email from Wee Creek Press, I assumed it was a thank, but no thanks type of letter that most authors receive over and over again during their careers.  When I opened the email, I realized it was a contract offer.  Wait, what?!  Did I just get a contract offer for the children's book I never intended to write and sent in on impulse?

Um, yes!  And so now I am pleased to announce that "Baby Sheep Gets a Haircut" (title could change, who knows) should be available in February of 2016.  Now if only I could draw... haha  Luckily the publisher will take care of the illustrations for me because I most certainly cannot.

This is just another piece of proof that when you dream, you should dream big because you never know what could happen.  It also proves that if you don't try, nothing will ever come of anything.  And you never know what WILL come of trying, even if you don't expect it!

I can't wait to read "Baby Sheep Gets a Haircut" to my daughters.  Even if one will probably be too  old for the story once it comes out in a few years.  It's something I'll always cherish as the first creative story I told her that got a good laugh out of her.  I hope it brings joy and laughter to many other children.

Author Interview...Judith Rolfs of Prism Book Group

Judith Rolfs released her latest novel "Bullet in the Night" on April 30th.  I encourage you to check it out here. I hope to get a chance to read it soon myself!  In the meantime, here is an interview with the author followed by links to her website and blog.  Enjoy!

BLOG INTERVIEW WITH JUDITH ROLFS, AUTHOR OF BULLET IN THE NIGHT

What’s the theme of Bullet in the Night?

Relationships are sacred, undervalued essentials in life but they can be hard. Husbands and wives must work so that the needs of both are met and they find joy in living together. Also friends are hugely important. My heroine almost loses a dear colleague. It’s a wake-up call to treasure those closest to you.

The equally important other theme is that people can become new creations with God’s intervention and a little social and spiritual support. Even hardened criminals can change.

What is the setting for your mystery Bullet in the Night?

The story takes place in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. I’m especially fond of this little town next to ours and consider it a pure, undeserved privilege to live in the lakes area. My characters walk the lake path, get coffee at Starbucks and visit City Hall. They run along the side roads and my heroine works in a quaint downtown Lake Geneva remodeled Victorian office building. I hope the energy of this marvelous getaway destination creeps into my writing.

How do you develop your characters?

My fascinating characters find me. They’re composites of no one I know who seem to arrive full-blown in my brain. The miracle of writing is you never know who will show up at what point of the manuscript if you work from a fluid outline as I do.

Some of these interesting people have complex problems that require professional counseling. This is how I incorporate my experience as a marriage and family counselor much like John Grisham writes about situation involving the law.

Is this your first novel?

Bullet in the Night is my first pure mystery novel. The suspense novel Directive 99 is my first. It’s an issue novel about the plight of the elderly in government funded health care centers. Directive 99 is an encouragement to be vigilant in protecting the lives of the elderly. They’re the new holocaust target in the war being waged against the life of the vulnerable – the aged and the unborn.

What other published books have you authored?

I have a new non-fiction book out called How To Be A Super Grandparent. My children’s storybook recently released is Unforgettable Stories For Kids.

In my humble opinion no child should grow up without their imagination experiencing my Adventures of Tommy Smurlee mystery series for kids eight and up.

Love Always, Mom is the inspiring true story of my eighteen-year-old son’s surviving cancer and being hit by a drunk driver in the same year.

I’ve also written books for teens, kids with cancer, women and men’s marriage and life enrichment non-fiction. View Judith Rolfs amazon author page for a full list of books.

What advice do you have for other authors?

I’m humbled to be asked as I’m always learning about this amazing process of turning words into ideas. First I’d say experiment, don’t be afraid to try different genre. Take your time, don’t rush a book to publication. Put writing projects away for a while to let them germinate. But always, always finish what you start. I have some projects that were many, many years from starting point to print.

Also, let your values shine through your characters. My personal preference is to write happy endings that weave together details in realistic ways. Life is hard, but it can be so much fun, let’s convey that in writing. And give readers some good entertainment in the process.

Sacrifices for Writing

5/13/2014

As some of you may know, I am the mother to two young children.  My oldest just turned 5 in April and my youngest is 15 months old.  When my first daughter was born I left my full time radio career to stay home.  Eventually, I embarked upon a writing career and I am currently in love with my job.  My only regret is that I didn't do something in the writing realm sooner.

Anyway, since I spend every minute possible with my girls, the time to write is not always forthcoming.  I have had to carve that time out with care.  My writing takes place only when both girls are asleep.  I worked hard to coordinate their naps so that they would need to nap at about the same time every afternoon.  This worked beautifully to give me an hour or so alone a day to write.

I have a lot to do in that hour.  I am a freelance writer and have regular assignments from a number of clients.  I am an author with two books under contract undergoing editing.  I like to keep this blog updated weekly.  I often do interviews for other blogs and so on and so forth.  That hour is precious to me and essential to keep my career going.

As I mentioned, my older daughter is 5 and she doesn't really need a nap anymore.  She is SUPER good about going to her room for her "nap" and she never complains about that aspect.  However, she doesn't really nap anymore.  She finds ways to entertain herself and she leaves me alone so we're both happy.

Recently, though, she has found a few too many ways to entertain herself.  Case in point...the other day I went upstairs to get my younger daughter when she arose from her nap and I found my bedroom essentially teepeed.  My older daughter had strung five ace bandages from various windows and doors over to the bed and she had hung bras,  underwear, socks, and anything else she found from them.  My jaw dropped.

And even more recently, she dragged every laundry basket we had in the house to her room and built a dirty laundry tower in her closet...I'm not kidding the thing was almost as tall as me.  I know that was my fault for not having done laundry in a while, but still.  My jaw dropped even farther when I saw that one because it took me a while to figure out what she'd done.

How I don't notice her doing these things while she's actually doing them, I don't know.  I guess the writing sucks me in.  It's just an example of one of the sacrifices I make as a writer.  My daughter "naps" nicely and doesn't complain...I get my writing done and feel refreshed and ready to play for another numerous amount of hours.  But I have a lot of clean up work to enjoy because of it!

She'll be in kindergarten in the fall so we only have a few more months to limp through in order to get to a point where I don't have to force a "nap" on her and she won't have to redecorate anything anymore.  Someday she'll understand and laugh at the things she did.  I get to laugh at them now!  On that note, I better go see what she's done today...

Sea Creatures and Solstice Island by Mae Clair

Thank you for inviting me to your blog today, Brooke. I’m delighted to be here to share my current release, SOLSTICE ISLAND, a romantic adventure novella that centers around the quest for an aquatic creature.

Sea beasts seem to come in two popular varieties: serpents and leviathans. There are exceptions, of course, (colossal squids, gargantuan octopi, and carnivorous mutant fish), but traditionally sea monsters tend to be classified as serpents or leviathans. When it came time to create a mythical oceanic creature for my latest release, SOLSTICE ISLAND, I tried to avoid using the word serpent as much as possible. I didn’t want the image of a snake-like creature.

For some reason, I’ve always loved the word leviathan. The Bible mentions these creatures several times in the Old Testament, although there is debate as to whether the reference is to an actual seabeast, water-dwelling dinosaur or whale. I chose to make my leviathan less categorical, and created a mythological creature known as the Sea Goliath.

Rylie Carswell, my heroine, is an amateur cryptozoologist—someone who studies creatures that may or may not exist (think Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster). See where things are headed? :)

Rylie is tracking the Sea Goliath when her quest leads her to Keel Beach and charter boat captain, Daniel Decatur. Daniel is all too familiar with cryptozoology, as his parents were noted experts in the field, and were tracking the Sea Goliath when their boat mysteriously vanished nineteen years earlier. He’s reluctant at first, but it isn’t long before Rylie convinces him to aid her in her search for the creature . . . a quest that leads them to the secret treasure of Solstice Island.

Writing this tale allowed me to combine my love of myth and romance. Adding adventure to the mix was a fun and exhilarating experience. I don’t actually see myself hopping on a boat to track down a sea creature with a fondness for gobbling up ships, but I had a blast writing about it!

If you have a taste for adventure, romance and myth, I invite you to add Solstice Island to your Goodreads TBR list.

SOLSTICE ISLAND is available for purchase exclusively through Amazon. You can pick up your copy for only .99 cents by clicking here

If you don’t have a Kindle, you can download a FREE Kindle Reading App for your PC, MAC, iPad, iPhone, Android or tablet here

Thanks so much for having me on your blog today, Brooke!

SOLSTICE ISLAND Blurb
Can an ancient leviathan work magic between a practical man and an idealistic woman?

Rylie Carswell is an amateur cryptozoologist in search of a mythical creature, the Sea Goliath. In order to reach Solstice Island, a location the ancient leviathan is rumored to haunt, she’s forced to hire charter boat captain, Daniel Decatur.

Initially, Daniel wants nothing to do with the trip or the fool woman waving double payment in his face. Convinced she’s yet another loony treasure hunter looking for gold on the remote island, he reluctantly agrees. An embittered neighbor wants to have his charter license yanked, so the extra cash will help him stay afloat.

It doesn’t take long for Daniel to realize Rylie is after the same beast his parents were tracking when they mysteriously vanished ten years earlier. He’s avoided all links to cryptozoology ever since, but the smart and sexy cryptid hunter has him second-guessing his oath and wondering what he’s signed on for.

Warning: A family legacy, glowing plankton and rough waters.

Radio Interview & Book Signing!

A few weeks ago while my older daughter was in preschool my phone rang.  This is noteworthy because no one hardly ever calls me.  :)  So when I answered and the person on the other end said, "Is this Brooke?" my heart began to beat hard.  The reason for that was because I recognized it as a local number and I thought perhaps my daughter was sick at preschool and I needed to go get her.  I'm a mom.  I panic. :)  But instead, it was the library.  Whew!  Once I realized that fact, I calmed down a bit.  Then they asked me if I'd be willing to do an author event on the evening of May 22nd.  I would get half an hour or so to speak and I could bring books to sell and sign for those interested.  I agreed immediately, of course, and was shocked and thrilled that they asked.  Now, I don't expect a huge turnout or anything, but it should be a good time and great practice for promotions I'll have to do in the future with the two new books that are coming out.  I have no idea what I'll talk about, but I have time to figure that out.  I'll be sure to post how it went after the fact...good or bad! :)  The details for the event are on the front page of the website.  It'll be May 22nd at the Plattsmouth Public Library at 6:30pm.

As you may or may not know, I was in radio for 12 years before I merged into the writing world.  A gal I knew from my radio days contacted me and wanted to do an interview with me for a short radio feature she does on a weekly basis.  I used to be the production director at the station group where she works and I remembered producing those very features.  It was strange being on the other side of things this time around!  I was able to actually go to the station kid-free to record with her.  We chatted for a while and then recorded the feature.  It's hard to get much or everything into 2 minutes but we did what we could!  I asked the producer to email it to me when it was complete and below, you should be able to put play on the audio and hear the actual feature that will be airing mid-May in Omaha.  After the book signing is over, they said they would take that portion of the program out and use it as more of a generic feature when they need filler.  Works for me!  It was weird being back in the studio as more of a guest.  I'm so used to running things on the other end when I was there.  But though it brought back memories, I can honestly say it didn't make me miss those days. Instead, it affirmed that I am in the right place where I am now...at home with my kids and writing up a storm whenever possible!

Author Interview...Nicole Zoltack...blog tour!

I'm excited to be a part of Nicole Zoltack's blog tour.  These types of things are so much fun.  I have not read Nicole's book and it is not the normal type of book I read or write.  But I am absolutely fascinated by authors from this genre.  It takes SO  much imagination and creativity and I always wonder where it all comes from.  On that note, I give you my interview with Nicole Zoltack followed by all of her contact details.  Enjoy!

Tell us a little bit about your background.

I'm a WAHM of 3 young boys (5 ½, 3 ¾, and 2). I have a wonderful husband – my first kiss and college sweetheart. We met the first day of classes freshman year of college, where I graduated with a B.S. in chemistry. I always wanted to be a writer but figured I wouldn't be able to support myself by it for a long while, hence the science major. I wanted to be a CSI but that didn't work out. Hopefully one day, I'll use my psych and forensic classes to write some amazing mysteries. J

Now tell us how you got into writing.

I've always wanted to be a writer. I wrote short stories since I first learned how to write. Started my first novel literally during sixth grade. Took me 10 years on and off to finish it. Turned to poetry (really bad poetry) in high school. In college, I learned about Nanowrimo and got back into novel writing and haven't stopped ever since.

Was getting published hard?

Hard is a relative term. I had written 50K of a fantasy romance novel when I was talking to a publisher on a yahoo group publisher chat. She asked to see the story when I finished it. I added another 30K, edited it, emailed it, and waited. When she accepted, I was so shocked I almost didn’t know how to react!

Even though I'm published and have several novels and novellas under my belt, I still get butterflies in my stomach each time I submit and I still get rejections.

Give us a summary of your new release.

WHITE HELLEBORE is the second book in my superhero romance trilogy, Heroes of Falledge. Nicholas and his sheriff girlfriend Julianna thought their troubles were behind them, but then not one but two villains show up. It's up to Black Hellebore and his sidekick the batty witch Gavina to save the day again.

Any others on the horizon?

I'm just finished writing Scarlet Magi, the last book in the Heroes of Falledge trilogy. What's up next? Good question! I'm not quite sure myself. I have so many ideas I'm not sure which to go with next.

Where do you get your ideas?

From everywhere. People watching, TV, movies, "what if" land, dreams…

How long does it take you to write a novel?

That depends on the story. I've been averaging about a month and half to two months lately. Novellas can be as short as a week but usually half a month to a month.

What do you enjoy doing outside of writing?

My family, of course! Horseback riding. Going to the PA Ren Faire. Exercising. I'm a fitness nut.

Do you find certain times of the day or certain things inspire you to write?

Not really. With the boys, I grab whatever spare time I can find to write. Sometimes pictures will inspire me, especially well done fantasy works.

What advice would you give to a new writer wishing to make it in the publishing world?

Read and write and read and write some more. You can never stop learning more about the craft of writing.

We'd love to hear a few quirky facts about you...things that don't normally come up in an interview!

Um… I'm really short at 4'11" ¾. What else? I love to dress up. (Channel my inner girl, maybe? Or to make up for all the testosterone in the house more likely.) I absolutely love chocolate and cupcakes and strawberries and nuts, especially cashews, and now I'm hungry. LOL

Thank you for having me!

BLURB:

After destroying Skull Krusher, Nicholas Adams thinks Falledge is safe and becomes a security guard at the museum, watching a valuable statue. Unfortunately, the Egyptian statue houses the soul of a scorned witch, biding her time to have her revenge on the descendants of her cheating lover.

Kiya the witch isn't the only new foe in town as the drug that created Skull Krusher has now transformed a scientist into yet another monster, forcing Nicholas to don his Black Hellebore mask again and save Falledge.

Nicholas has no help this time as Kiya gains possession of his love Julianna's body and brings the soul of Justina, Nicholas's high school sweetheart and Julianna's twin, with her. Despite himself, Nicholas is torn between the sisters. If he can't stop the fiends from taking over the world and destroying humankind, he'd never be able to find lasting, true love.

BIO:

Nicole Zoltack loves to write in many genres, especially romance, whether fantasy, paranormal, or regency. When she’s not writing about knights, superheroes, or zombies, she loves to spend time with her loving husband and three energetic young boys. She enjoys riding horses (pretending they’re unicorns, of course!) and going to the PA Renaissance Faire, dressed in garb. She’ll also read anything she can get her hands on. Her current favorite TV show is The Walking Dead. To learn more about Nicole and her writing, visit http://NicoleZoltack.blogspot.com.
