Back in 2014, I was offered a contract from Wee Creek Press, which at the time was part of Whiskey Creek Press. I was thrilled as I had not yet had an experience publishing a children's book.
Baby Sheep Gets a Haircut is a silly tale about a baby sheep who grows his hair so long he can no longer see anything. When he gets a trim job, he doesn't know what's what since it's been so long since he's seen anything. My oldest daughter LOVED the story when I made it up (she was 5) and has been asking for it ever since. I wrote it down and sent it in. I know how hard it is to get into the children's market, so I was thrilled to get a contract.
Anyway, since that time, Wee Creek Press split from its parent company and branched out on its own. I emailed the person in charge regarding my book as it was to be released in Feb 2016. I heard back and he said it would now come out in June 2016. That correspondence was over a year ago. Now that June is just a few months away and I have heard nothing, I began to wonder.
I sent an email asking if June 2016 was still the date and what would happen with illustrations. I wrote the story, but I didn't include illustrations as I have no talent in that area. :) I got no answer. I waited a week or two and then sent another inquiry through their website. And then their facebook page. Nothing.
I have heard nothing from them in well over a year and cannot get any answers at all now. Since the supposed release date is just a few months away and as far as I know there are no illustrations, I'm guessing the deal is dead. It's hard to say what to do next. I'd start submitting elsewhere, but I don't want that to come back on me. So I suppose I'm in a holding period now until after the June date passes. At that time, it's probably safe.
I've had a lot of things happen in the publishing industry in my years as an author/writer, but this is a new one! I hope, for baby sheep's sake, he will one day get his hair cut. Until then, other farm animals, please be kind to the dear little sheep. He will need your guidance a while longer.
