I was sad to see the opportunity go, but glad to finally know where the project stood. I decided to let it sit for a while and move forward with it myself or with another publisher at a future time. But I'm not always the most patient person and it has been sitting for a good two months now so... :)
I have decided to put "Baby Sheep Gets a Haircut" out myself! I have several reasons for this. First, I love the story. Second, my daughters love the story. Third, that darn sheep needs his haircut!!!
Next fall, my youngest daughter will be starting preschool. That means I will have two hours to myself two days a week. I would love to take advantage of that time by visiting school classrooms, reading my stories, and presenting some other reading interactive games. In order to do this in the most fun manner, I thought having TWO children's books to read would be best. I've read the baby sheep story to classes before, but it doesn't have pictures. Pictures are always best.
So where does the book stand? I have hired an illustrator, her name is Mary, and I just sent her the story details over the weekend. As I was searching for the right illustrator, Mary sent my a test sheet of baby sheep so I could get an idea of her overall style. That is what the picture is you see above. Now she'll begin working on the actual illustrations. I wish I could draw myself, but since I can't, it's fun to watch someone else's creativity take over the project. She and I will be going back and forth via email for the next month or so to get things hammered out. I gave her a deadline of the end of June with hopes of having the book ready to roll by fall or before.
More details to come as the process progresses. In the meantime, if you have a child in your life and they might enjoy a classroom visit from a children's author next year, send me a message! Looking forward to sharing this book and "Shower in the Rain" along with some interactive reading activities with kids next year!
