Character Possession

I have to admit, when I am in the midst of writing a story, I feel a bit possessed. Whenever I get a free moment away from my girls, all I want to do is flesh out the story. I find myself lying awake at night trying to hash out plot issues. The characters bug me to write their stories.

I have said this often to those who ask and even some who don't...I only write a story when the plot/characters/whatever bugs me SO much that I can't NOT write it. Lately, characters have been taking hold of my mind often.

When I wrote "Accept this Dandelion," I thoroughly enjoyed my main character's antics. And I formed a few side characters simply to support Renee's role in the book. When I completed the book, I had a smile on my face. That was that! Done and done! I had no idea that over a year later, one of the side characters would start to bug me to tell HER story.

Her name is Eva Merida and this is sort of what I imagine her looking like. She's petite, beautiful, and has gorgeous hair. She's as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside and originally, I meant for her to be stiff competition for Renee, my main character in "Accept this Dandelion."

So when the "voices" in my head told me that Eva needs a man and I had to write her story to see how she found love, I was sure I could brush them off. I was wrong. The inkling continued. And so I feverishly wrote "Dandelions on the Road." Eva's romantic comedy journey to happiness. It isn't a cookie cutter, ordinary love story either!

Once I completed that book, Renee came back to me and was like hey, if you're going to write about her, you have to do another one on me! Something like that... :) I negotiated with Renee and we have come to an agreement. "After the Final Dandelion" will continue both Renee AND Eva's love stories, giving their readers a final look at how things look after both women completed their journey on the "Accept this Dandelion" TV show.

Now that I've explained all that, you should know that I'm in the throes of writing "After the Final Dandelion" now. Normally, I like to wait several months, if not way longer between writing books. But this time, they're bugging me too much!!! Those characters!!!  Plus, I feel like I'll remember more if I do it sooner rather than later. And so...I write. Feeling possessed by these two women until I get their stories straight!

Luckily, I write fast. Perhaps in a month or so I'll be able to sleep at night without plotting someone's wedding, someone's engagement, someone's impromptu emergency haircut.

But for now, I've already said too much. And the only reason they're letting me take a break in their story now is because I'm still technically writing about them. :) Back to the salt mines with Eva and Renee now!!!

Thanks for stopping for a few minutes to fill us in on the details of your writing process.

You aren't alone in your madness. :)

I had the same thing happen with a series of novels I'm working on. A minor character in book one kept bugging me to tell her story in book two, so I did. And I've been thinking I need to involve both of those characters in the plot for book three, but haven't worked out the details yet. I have a feeling I won't rest until I do, though. :)
